Bernie Ebbers Will Likely Die in Prison

ebbers141.jpgThe United States Supreme Court yesterday refused to hear an appeal from former Wordcom CEO Bernard Ebbers, which means that, unless Ebbers is pardoned, he will serve most, if not all, of the rest of his life in prison. I’ve said it before and will say it now again – sentences in our criminal system, especially white collar sentences, are way, way out of whack.

I’ve been praying for the President to pardon Bernie for some time now and believe it will happen. Remember Scott Sullivan was released after only four years and He Was the one who cooked the books.

Well, I certainly wasn’t wishing for Mr. Ebbers’ death. I was simply commenting that, based upon his age and the length of his sentence, it seems likely that he’ll spend the rest of his life in prison. And I trust its clear from the general tenor of the posts on this blog that I agree that the sentence is draconian, if not unjust. As for a possible pardon – I think there’s really not any likelihood that this President will pardon Ebbers, or any of the other white collar defendants from that era who were given ridiculously long sentences (see, e.g., Jeff Skilling). If Ebbers is hoping for a pardon, he’d better be hoping that Obama is a one termer.

I lost my entire 401k (200k at one time) due to this fraud. Too bad they don’t have hard labor in prison anymore. His greed and dishonesty cost a lot of people an ongoing struggle. I’m too old to recover and my dreams for retirement are ruined. Teach him to disarm roadside bombs and if he messes up doing that too bad.
